That 10 is 6 and 4 — the relationship, not a procedure. Getting this makes regrouping much easier later.
  • · If they start finger counting, put ten counters on the table. Seeing it is what makes it click.
  • · The blank moves around on purpose. A child who only knows "take the part from the whole" will stall — that's the useful signal.
