Times tables: why they say it in order but freeze on 7 x 8

A child who can recite the sevens straight through will still stall on 7 x 8 in the middle of a division problem. That's not forgetting — it's that the fact was stored as part of a sequence, and a sequence can only be entered at the beginning. Fixing it means breaking the order.

Shuffle, reverse, and ask backwards

Mix the cards. Ask 8 x 7 right after 7 x 8. Say "56" and ask what makes it. Any one of these forces retrieval instead of recitation, and retrieval is what a test requires.

Only about ten facts are actually hard

Once you drop the 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s and the ones that repeat, what's left is a short list — 6x7, 6x8, 7x8, 7x9, 8x9 and a few neighbors. Drill those. Running the full table every night spends most of the time on facts already known.

Timed pages come last, not first

A hundred-square grid is excellent for a child who knows the facts and needs speed. Handed to a child still figuring them out, it's just pressure. Use it to beat yesterday's time, never to compare with another child.

Division trouble is usually a times table problem

A child stuck on 56 ÷ 7 typically knows 7 x 8 = 56 but can't run it backwards. Practicing division won't fix it. Go back and practice the facts in reverse.

Five minutes, every day

Facts are built by number of days, not length of session. Five minutes daily beats half an hour on Sunday, every time.

Questions parents ask

What grade should these be solid?

Typically through third grade, since fourth leans on them constantly. Later is common and fixable.

Do songs and apps work?

As an entry point, yes. They tend to build the sequence, so pair them with shuffled written practice.

Is it free?

Times tables, division, and the hundred-square grid are all free to print with no limit.
